St. Mary Magdalen church in Kentwood was destroyed by fire in July of 2012. Construction of the new church began in May. Supporters gathered this morning as the cross was placed on the steeple of the new church.

St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Kentwood was destroyed by fire in 2012.  Fireworks are suspected to have been the cause of the fire. Hundreds gathered this week as rebuilding began.

Saturday night's fire at Saint Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Kentwood almost completely destroyed the church. Tuesday night, Kentwood Fire Chief Brent Looman issued a statement saying "fireworks were a likely factor". This weekend, Mass will be celebrated at the East Kentwood High School Auditorium. Bishop Walter Hurley says the church will be rebuilt.

I was talking to a friend of mine a couple days ago who said she couldn't count the number of people who came up to her and tried to run the "smudge" of dirt off her forehead.  She was kind of laughing about it because she had to stop them and say, "No, it's there because it's Ash Wednesday, you know Lent!"
