Saturday night's fire at Saint Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Kentwood almost completely destroyed the church.

Tuesday night, Kentwood Fire Chief Brent Looman issued a statement saying "fireworks were a likely factor".

This weekend, Mass will be celebrated at the East Kentwood High School Auditorium.

Bishop Walter Hurley says the church will be rebuilt.

Mlive.com has more of Kentwood Fire Chief Brent Looman's statement:

Authorities have now ruled out all possible causes other than fireworks as they investigate a blaze that left St. Mary Magdalen parish in ruins earlier this week.

"The origin of the fire was the roof in the rear of the church," Kentwood Fire Chief Brent Looman said in a statement released tonight.  "At this point, it has been determined that fireworks were a likely factor in causing the fire."

Looman noted there were no indications of electrical problems that may have factored in.

As the investigation into the fire continues, authorities are asking witnesses to come forward with any information they may have.  Contact the Kentwood Fire Department at 616-554-0800, the Kentwood Police Department at 616-698-6580, or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
