Michigan Animal Control Officers to Sleep Outside in Dog Houses

Are these three animal control officers from Saginaw in the dog house? Well, they're not in any kind of trouble... but they will be sleeping outside in dog houses this weekend, for a good cause.

The weather is supposed to warm up a bit this week, but who knows what could happen-- it's Michigan.

And that's exactly why three officers Saginaw County Animal Control have pledged to spend the night outside.

ABC 12 reports that Officer Joaquin Guerrero and two others are hoping to bring awareness about leaving animals outside to long in cold weather.

On Friday, starting at 6 p.m. until 8 a.m. Saturday, the officers plan to sleep outdoors at Apple Mountain in Thomas Township.

Two officers will be in dog houses made by prisoners at the Saginaw Correctional Facility. The third will have no shelter. The officers won't have sleeping bags or blankets- just straw.

Students from Hemmeter Elementary will be there to monitor the officers throughout the night for a school project.

Medical staff will be on hand as well.

Officer Guerrero said,

"We've got to be that voice for them. We've got to help them so it doesn't happen, so we don't find these animals frozen. And that, we can't save them all, but the ones we can save, or the awareness we can bring, that just keeps educating more people and more people."

The officers will check in throughout the night via Facebook Live. Donations will be accepted too for the Saginaw County Animal Care Center.
