Want to See What Became of an Old Neighborhood of Grand Rapids?
Here is a fun blast from the past of Grand Rapids to see what a part of the city was, and what it is today. We all know progress moves on, and as Grand Rapids continues to grow and develop, old neighborhoods of the city keep reinventing themselves.
A large part of the Bridge Street business district is a perfect example of a remarkable rebirth and revitalization.
In the old days, being close to the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, Kennedy's Barber Shop and Beauty Supply was a staple for many years. Right next door, Bert's Tavern, a popular stop off for many.
In later years Kennedy's became the Ex-Par Paint Company. All Westside folks bought paint and wallpaper from Ex-Par.
But, when Bert's was still in business, next door was Victor Wert Sign Painter. He did signs, billboards, art, everything. And on the ground floor of the sign shop was Schmitt Shoes. If you wanted a good pair of shoes you went to Schmitt's.
Or, how about a good set of tires for your car? You would get them at Firestone, West Side Tire, of course.
But, as years past, that portion of Bridge Street began to fade. Businesses left, closed down, moved to better business districts, maybe even out to the big, bad, malls.
So, what do you do with a rundown westside district of Grand Rapids?
You have people who have the vision of reinvention and revitalization. They have the money to make it work and rebuild and redevelop.
So what happened to the rundown business district? Take a look!
New Holland Brewing and their beautiful restaurant and brewery/bar along with new apartments and condos.
And, Just down the block, more popular restaurants and bars have created another dynamic entertainment district of Grand Rapids.
True growth and excitement for Grand Rapids.
Who knows how it will change in the next 50 to 100 years.
