Wait! It’s Not Tulip Time is It? In Holland it Is!
It's been cold, rainy, even a little snowy in places, so thinking about Tulip Time in Holland is way our of everyone's mind. That is the Tulip Time folks. They have to prepare now for the thousand of tourists to see the beautiful tulips. So, what are they doing?
The City of Holland and Tulip Time folks have started planting tulip bulbs all over the city, hundreds of thousands of bulbs.
Actually, in Holland during Tulip Time, there are over one million tulips throughout the city. But, each year they always plant new ones to add to the already tulips in the ground. That number adds up to over 500,000 new bulbs! Oh, my aching back!!
Where is someone going to find that many tulip bulbs, Flowerland, Lowe's, Meijer? Nope, the Netherlands, of course.
Even though they could buy from tulip farms on the West Coast, the tie to the Netherlands is key.
So now Holland's Parks and Recreation Department "digs" in, and, along with community volunteers, usually one thousand or so, will have all those bulbs in the ground before Thanksgiving. What a job, because they have to first dig out the old bulbs to be replaced, design new beds, figure out which tulip goes where, and so forth.
Just walking around Holland in the Spring during Tulip Festival and seeing all the tulips is amazing, and we all take it for granted. That is all of us except the over one thousand people and staff doing all the work.
