Former Detroit Lions receiver Calvin 'Megatron' Johnson has been out of the public eye for awhile. Well, he's back, and he's gonna get you high!

Calvin Johnson this week won preliminary approval in the Detroit area to open a medical marijuana dispensary. The former Lion great, who retired in 2016, now awaits final approval from the state licensing board.

Medical marijuana approval could lead to a recreational marijuana dispensary when those start getting approved later this year.

There's no word as to where the dispensary will be in the metro Detroit area.

The Detroit Free Press reports that Johnson and his partner, Robert Sims, sought approval last year for a grow house to grow their own strains of weed, but were turned down when it turned up that Johnson had several unpaid speeding tickets on the books in his home state of Georgia.

Johnson says he has taken care of those, and the pair will reapply for a grow permit later this year, according to their lawyer.

Johnson, as an ex-NFL player knows full well the pain issues that follow players in the league. Several players have been trying to get medical marijuana approved for use by the league in relieving pain. According to the Free Press:

Football players are increasingly turning to marijuana to help with the pain they live with as a result of the crushing hits they sustain during their careers. One player — tight end Martellus Bennett, who retired last year from the New England Patriots after 10 years in the NFL — said in a podcast earlier this year that more than 80 percent of football players indulge in pot to help with the aches.
