A Christmas Gift for Mail Carrier? There is a Big No-No!

As many of us are wrapping up our Christmas shopping with gifts for all, if you area able, don't for get your letter carrier, mailman, mailperson, who ever.

They work hard and through rain, sleet, snow or hail, and will be there for you. They are working extra hours to make sure you get all you mail, gifts, etc., if at all possible.

So, leaving a little gift of thanks in your mailbox for them would be a great thing to do.

But, you better watch out, because there are some rules and guidelines you need to be aware of.

Your mailperson is a federal employee, our sister station 97X reports, and their jobs fall under the Executive Branch of the United States government. and they have to follow the ethics guideline of that branch of government.

Here is the main rule:

1. They cannot accepts cash and cash equivalents, such as checks or gift cards that can be exchanged for cash.

2. Carriers are permitted to accept a gift worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion, such as Christmas.

3. They cannot accepts gifts that may add up to more than $50 in any calendar year.

So, let me help you out here with some ideas.

Maybe you could get them.....

some warm gloves,

a scarf,

or hand warmers.

I've given restaurant gift cards before because you can't exchange them for cash.

How about some Christmas cookies?

And, true story, as I was chatting with my mailman a few years ago, it came out he loved Pecan pie. Guess what he got for Christmas!
