The holidays are upon us. Thanksgiving is next week and Christmas follows about four weeks later. Hopefully most all will be spending time with family and friends, but what about pets in shelters. Sure, they are safe, but it's a stressful situation for them and they deserve a loving home if possible.

That's where the BISSELL Pet Foundation jumps in yet again as they are hosting their “Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope” reduced-fee adoption event from Dec. 1 – 11, 2022, and they are including 30 Michigan shelters.

It was in 2011 that Cathy Bissell, a true lover of animals decided that the pet adoption process needed a little boost, so she organized the BISSELL Pet Foundation as a 501c (3) non-profit, and the rest is history with thousands of families and individuals adopting pets, nearly 590,000 and counting, at greatly reduced rates over the past 11-years and giving them loving homes to live out their lives.

So, the “Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope” event will run from December 1 – 11, this year. This is the largest funded adoption event in the country. During each nationwide event, BISSELL Pet Foundation sponsors reduced adoption fees so shelters can charge $50 or less to take deserving pets from kennels to the couches of loving homes.

The event will actually include 43 states, with Michigan, of course being a large focal point. Here is West Michigan, the Humane Society of West Michigan will participate along with Harbor Humane, Heaven Can Wait Animal Haven, West Michigan SPCA Faithful to Felines, Kent County Animal Shelter, Wishbone Allegan Shelter, Al-Van Humane Society, and so many others throughout the state and country.

In talking with Cathy Bissell, she said:

Shelters are overcrowded and in desperate need of support due to slowed adoption rates and increased length of stay for pets. With so many people seeking to add pets to their family around this time of year, our ‘Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope’ event is the perfect opportunity to make a difference in your community by saving a life and creating space to give another homeless pet a chance.
