Traffic Alert: US131 Construction And Closures In Grand Rapids Area
It's going to get messy on US-131 pretty soon because MDOT (the Michigan Department of Transportation) will be starting a road project later this month and part of 131 will be shutting down!
MDOT says they are going to invest approximately $6.2 million to improve the northbound and southbound US-131 bridges over Plaster Creek just south of Burton Street in Grand Rapids. That work will also include concrete joint repairs on US-131 from 28th Street to Pearl Street.
MDOT says this work will cause some inconveniences for those who frequently travel the area. You think?!?
Here is the deal. Northbound U.S. 131 is scheduled to be closed and detoured at 28th Street – starting March 31 and through May 1.
NORTHBOUND 131 AT 28TH STREET
However, one lane of northbound 131 will remain open from Burton Street to Pearl Street so that some traffic can get through. But, the entrance ramps to northbound U.S. 131 will be closed from 44th Street to Market. Yikes!
If you do get on northbound 131 coming through the city, how do you get off? The off-ramps will be closed at Burton, Hall, Martin Luther King Jr., Wealthy Street, and Pearl Street. April travel will be tough!

NORTHBOUND 131 AT BURTON
But wait, that's not all.
When they finish Northbound they'll move to Southbound. The biggest impact there will be the closing of southbound at Burton Street for about four weeks. Oh my!
CLOSED EXPRESSWAY COMING SOON
And of course, there will be ramp closures in effect. There will be one lane of southbound U.S. 131 open from Ann Street to Burton Street with all the on and off ramps closed in that stretch.
EXPRESSWAY REPAIRS
They will also be doing concrete joint repairs, so, yes, 131 northbound is not going to be fun for the month of April, and southbound for the month of May and part of June.
Welcome to Road Construction season!
