It was December, 2016 that he joined WZZM-TV13. He hit the ground running and never looked back as he became one of the top sportscasters in Michigan, West Michigan specifically.

But, as the broadcasting business continues to evolve and change, so Jamal Spencer is planning a new chapter in his life as well, and has decided that now is the time to move on to bigger and better things.

Jamal just announced:

"The time has come to publicly announce what many already know: My time in Grand Rapids is nearing an end and I’m returning to Detroit. I’ve taken a job at NEWSNet as a Sports Anchor. (If you haven’t heard of it yet, you will.)
The last nine years have been filled with more ups than downs and I wouldn’t be the man, or journalist, that I am now without my time at WZZM. However, a new challenge awaits."

Jamal was born and raised in Detroit, MI on the city's northwest side. After attending Communications and Media Arts High School, he moved on to Michigan State.

Following college he worked at Fox Sports Detroit as a sideline reporter for college hockey and high school sports, moving to sports reporting in Fargo, North Dakota. Brrrr!

But, a few years later he got a chance to return home to Michigan to become sports director at TV13 here in Grand Rapids.

Over his career, he has been honored with many awards including the "13 On Your Sidelines" receiving "Best Sportscast" in the 2021 Broadcast Excellent Awards, presented by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

But now it's a chance to truly return home, to Detroit, be closer to family, and bring his well-honed craft home!

Congratulation Jamal! We'll miss you!
