Lose The Internet? Almost 1 Million in Michigan Will!
This sad news is nearly 1 Million Michiganders may lose their internet service beginning in May. Holy smokes.
WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?
It all began during the Pandemic. In the beginning there were massive business shutdowns and people were working from home. It was pretty difficult to connect from home with all the work to be done.
Software like Zoom and Microsoft Teams quickly ramped up but not everyone had connectivity. Internet and WiFi are expensive and thousands didn't have access or couldn't afford it.
SO WHAT HAPPENED?
The Federal Government came to the rescue. They created the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) funding it with billions of dollars. With kids having to go to school online as well, millions of families nation wide weren't able to afford access, so the ACP was a life saver.
This was a life-saver program specifically created for low-income people, veterans, and senior citizens to access the Internet for $30 a month.
WHY WILL PEOPLE LOSE INTERNET ACCESS?
Here is the bad news. The ACP program will end on April 30th. The funds have run out!
The FCC explains that unless lawmakers act to give the program additional funding, the full $30 discount will end at the end of April. There are some stipulations that would allow enrolled households to receive a partial discount in May. After that, they expect the money to be gone and the program to end entirely.
IS THERE ANY HOPE?
The FCC has another program called “Lifeline” that also offers a discount that can be applied to broadband internet service.
The website Whistleout.com says if you’re currently enrolled in the ACP, you do have options if the program ends. You may still qualify for free internet from other government programs depending on your income and plan options.
