Will You Come Out Of These Michigan Hospitals Alive?

When you're in the middle of an emergency, you darn well want to make sure you are getting the very best care. You don't want to take any chances on your and your loved ones safety and health while in a hospital. You want to leave, ALIVE!

Here in Michigan health care can be a little "ify", so to speak, on a safety level. And, it's concerning to find that there are some Michigan hospitals that have been rated a D or F for patient outcomes. Now that really is scary! I want to live!

Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade has officially posted the fall 2023 rankings for each area hospital, which is as updated as you can get as of this point in the year for 2024. So it's extremely important to read some of these rankings and be aware of the surrounding hospitals in case an emergency occurs.

According to this list, three Michigan hospitals have been given a 'D' grade when it comes to patient safety, which is not exactly the best grade you could get. One Michigan hospital actually received an F for patient outcome and safety.

The rankings are based on letter grades, just like the grades you would receive in school. The hospital grades are based on things such as infections, problems with surgery, safety problems, practices to prevent errors, and the hospital staff in general.

So, what about Michigan?

The three Michigan hospitals that received a D or worse are all in the Detroit area.

DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital

DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital

and...McLaren Oakland in Pontiac.

The F grade was given to McLaren Flint, in Flint.

You're wondering about West Michigan, aren't you?

I'm happy to report that all of our West Michigan hospitals received a B or an A grade for patient safety and outcome.

Trinity - St. Mary's was graded A in the report

And, Holland Hospital also received an A grade.

Corewell Health Butterworth and, 

 Blodgett each received a B Grade.

University of Michigan-West also received a B Grade.
