A new mural is going up at Mercy Health Arena in Muskegon. What do you think should be on it?

MLive reports that The Muskegon City Public Art Initiative (MCPAI) is looking for community input on the new mural. You'll have the opportunity to share your thoughts on what defines Muskegon at three digital forums this month.

Dr. Hubert Massey, who hails from Detroit, will paint the mural on the exterior of the arena that faces West Western Avenue. According to his website, Massey has been creating large-scale public works of art throughout the Midwest for 20 years. His murals can be seen at the Flint Institute of the Arts, Detroit Athletic Club, and his alma mater, Grand Valley State University.

Massey says on his website,

“Public art begins with the community it will serve. In fact, after nearly 20 years of creating large-scale public works of art for various cities, communities and neighborhoods throughout the Midwest, it is my belief that public art should be, first and foremost, meaningful to those who surround it.”

The upcoming community input forums are scheduled to happen:

  • Jan. 12 at 3 p.m.
  • Jan. 13 at 10 a.m.
  • Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m.

Anyone who wants to participate should email judyhayner@gmail.com.

According to MLive, the plan is for the mural to be completed by September 2021.
