Brown recluse spiders are not normally a species that is found in Michigan, but they find their way here in shipping containers, when people move from the south, and any box or container they can cling on to.

According to WOOD TV, the brown recluse spider are usually found in a dark place, like a basement or a garage and are about the size of a quarter.

These spiders do not like a lot of activity so they shy away from the noise and prefer the quiet. They are not prone to bite so to get bit you have to aggravate them which usually happens not knowingly.

Although these spiders do not like to bite, when they do, it becomes very serious.

A man named Jeff Lasich, from Nunica, was bitten last week, according to WOOD-TV8. Lasich told WOOD that he was doing yard work and didn't even notice that he was bitten. But, when he awoke the next morning he had a dot roughly the size of a dime on his leg.

Upon going to the doctor, Lasich was told that he had been bitten by a brown recluse. Luckily, the bite was detected early and was treated.

A bite from a brown recluse bite can be bad news and cause the skin to necrotize (die).

If you believe you have been bitten by a brown recluse, you should seek medical care immediately.

According to WebMD, symptoms of a brown recluse bite (which you should see within a day or two of being bitten) include:

  • Pain or redness at the site of the bite

  • A deep sore (ulcer) that forms where you were bitten, with the skin at the center turning purple

  • Fever

  • Chills

  • Nausea

  • Joint pain

  • Feeling weak

  • Seizures or coma (very rare)
