What You Should Know About Gifting Teachers In Michigan
Giving a teacher a Christmas or Hanukkah gift is always a sweet idea. It's a thank you from the student as a way to show gratitude for their hard work.
But, did you know that there are rules and regulations about gift giving?
Here in Michigan, the regulations are designed to show fairness and avoid any appearance of favoritism.
According to the website Legal Clarity.org, there are two levels of laws and regulations, the state ethics laws, and what each local school district allows you to do.
How do you find your local schools rules? Ask! However, there should be information in the parent-student handbook.
Typically, schools limit gifts to the $25 or $50 dollar range, but, as Legal Clarity says, that would be a total for the entire year.
It is little known that the teacher can actually be fined or disciplined if they accept more, Legal Clarity states:
"Many district policies and state guidelines prohibit teachers from accepting cash or cash equivalents like general-use gift cards. This restriction exists because cash gifts are more easily seen as a direct payment, creating a higher risk for a conflict of interest. For example, one teacher was fined $1,800 for accepting a used laptop valued at $881."
Well, that certainly presents a problem. What are you able to give?

Something handmade would make a good gift. Maybe simply a handwritten note of how much the teacher means to you. Or, maybe some holiday treats such as cookies, chocolates, or special popcorn.
Teachers make such a difference in our children's lives and it is special when they are recognized for their effort by their students.
Just make sure you are gifting them the right way so you, and they, don't get into trouble.
