Strange New 10-4 Rule in Michigan Target Stores!
You may begin to see more friendly faces in a Target store near you!
Not the customers, hopefully we're already friendly, but the employees.
Target has instituted a new rule they call the 10-4 rule. Basically, be friendly to customers. Hmm, isn't that what they are supposed to be doing anyway?
I'll have to admit sometimes my shopping experience at Target hasn't always been a warm one. Many times I've had to search for an employee to help me, and their reaction has been quick, curt and dismissive.
Not anymore, according to Target.
With in-store sales lagging, and fewer shoppers showing up, Target is bound and determined to make your experience enjoyable.

MSN.com reports that Target says, "their new staff policy called the "10-4" program, designed to elevate the in-store guest experience by mandating specific friendly interactions between employees and customers."
MSN.com says the program depends on how close an employee is to a customer.
- The 10-Foot Rule: If an employee is within 10 feet of a customer, they are required to make eye contact, smile, and offer a wave or other friendly and welcoming body language.
- The 4-Foot Rule: When an employee comes within 4 feet of a customer, the interaction must become more personal. Staff members are required to verbally greet the guest, smile, and proactively initiate a “warm, helpful interaction.”
Target has found that they really need to find a better connection with their customers, and a warm, friendly greeting and courteous help certainly isn't too much to ask.
On the other side, however, a not too friendly employee might be a symptom of a deeper problem. They may be discouraged by what is going on within their Target store.
Hopefully Target is looking at both sides of the issue to make it better for both customer and employee.
