While normally it takes a while for a new law to go into effect, a spokesperson for the Food and Drug Administration has said that because this change "simply increased the age limit in existing law... it was able to go into effect immediately".
On Thursday, the Ann Arbor City Council voted to prohibit the sale of tobacco products to anyone under age 21. Ann Arbor is the first city in Michigan to raise the tobacco age to 21.
