Is your Mom special to you?  I hope so.  I was very fortunate to have a great Mom who supported us through think and thin. And believe me, my twin brother and I could make a very thin moment thinner! Our Mom was a saint!

A West Michigan student athlete is about to embark on a trip of a lifetime with the goal of gaining some worldwide recognition.

Big-time fun is coming to downtown Grand Rapids this Thursday, June 20th.  But, it's not for everyone, just for interns! Yes, the lowly intern, the do everything for everybody person, hoping to pick up experience and contacts to grab their first job.

The London Olympics wrapped up Sunday night with a closing ceremony that paid tribute to the best of British music over the years, featuring performances by iconic classic rockers, the reunited Spice Girls, and current superstars like One Direction and Jessie J.

There were many team uniforms that stood out at the Olympics.  The Russian warmup jackets were impossible to miss and many other countries stood out with their bright colors. The United States jackets that were worn on the medal podium stood out too.  They stood out because they weren't bright and they didn't feature our flags colors.  They were gray. The U.S. Women's Water Polo Team was in a hard-fought battle against Australia today. With time running out and a 9-8 lead, the United States was trying to hold on as Australia desperately tried to score in the semi-final match. With just 1 second left, U.S. Coach Adam Krikorian called a timeout.  It was an illegal timeout.

The Olympics are always a forum for amazing stories of victory, defeat, overcoming obstacles and also succumbing to them.  There have been several of these amazing moments so far in the 2012 London Olympic Games.  But, the following story of defeat and heartbreak has been absent from major American media.

The Olympics are all about bringing the world together to celebrate sports and competition.  But sometimes there are distractions. Politics and performance enhancing drugs occasionally create issues at the Games, but sometimes the distraction is something a little less serious...like a jacket. East Kentwood's Tia Brooks missed qualifying for the shot put final on Monday. Brooks, an East Kentwood High School graduate, threw 17.72 meters (just over 58 feet).  Brooks' throw was good for 11th place in her qualifying group of 16 and 20th of all 32 competitors. The top 12 qualified for the finals.

Michael Phelps has made Olympic history. Phelps' total of 22 medals is the most anyone has ever won and has many talking about where he ranks among the all-time Olympic greats. Phelps has finished the 2012 Olympic Games with 6 medals, 4 gold and 2 silver.  That gives Phelps 18 gold medals over his Olympic career.  Amazing.  But is it enough to be considered the greatest ever? GVSU graduate Sarah Zelenka and her teammate Sara Hendershot finished in fourth place in the women's rowing pairs final at the Olympics in England on Wednesday. Zelenka and Hendershot were in second place until both New Zealand and Austrialia passed them at the end.  The Americans finished 0.47 seconds out of second place and 0.2 seconds from the bronze.
