ArtPrize Eight

Zimoun's entry into ArtPrize Eight has one of the longer names of this fall's competition, "250 prepared ac-motors, 325kg roof laths, 1.0km rope." It's also one of the loudest entries with 250 motorized wood beams repeatedly striking the floor at SiTE:LAB on Rumsey Street.

ArtPrize tonight hosted the fifth annual Jurors’ Shortlist Event at the ArtPrize HUB/HQ Theater.

Christopher Schardt has had installations using fire or LEDs at Burning Man for ten years. This year, Schardt brings an underwater LED sculpture to ArtPrize Eight. His entry ran into electronic problems after being damaged by water last week, but is now working perfectly.

Stacie Tamaki is bringing miniature origami to Grand Central Market & Deli for the third straight year at ArtPrize. Watch as Tamaki demonstrates how she makes "Tinygami" and offers tips for beginners. She also explains the symbolism behind her origami mobiles.

Christopher Schardt's "Light Ripples" is in the Grand River next to the Blue Bridge for ArtPrize Eight. The underwater LED sculpture's electronics have been damaged by water. It is possible the sculpture will not be operational for the entirety of ArtPrize.

The Grand Valley State University Laker Marching Band, GVSU Dance Company and WGVU Nerd Walk will kick-off ArtPrize Wednesday, September 21, at Rosa Parks Circle in downtown Grand Rapids.

Music hasn't been a strength of ArtPrize, but it is slowly becoming a bigger part of the event and the music featured is getting better. This year, there are over 50 musical entries in the Blue Bridge Music Festival. Listen to some of the best.

ArtPrize brings thousands to Grand Rapids and kids are always a big part of the event. Many schools take trips to explore ArtPrize and families spend time downtown too. ArtPrize On-Screen is back with ten new films at ArtPrize Eight.

Jeffrey Augustine Songco's installation "Revelry" brought 2,700 pounds of Mardi Gras beads to Calder Plaza in Grand Rapids at ArtPrize 2015. Those beads were (mistakenly?) taken on opening weekend. Songco is back for ArtPrize Eight with the "Macarena" at UICA.

The first annual ArtPrize Preview Week begins Wednesday, Sept. 14 and runs through Tuesday, Sept. 20. Over 30 venues are participating and giving fans an early look at this year's ArtPrize entries.
