If You’re a Fast Driver in Michigan, You Better Watch Out!
Here is a really good question. How fast can you drive in Michigan and not break the law and get a ticket?
The simple answer is the posted speed limit! But, it's a little more complicated than that.

Let's take the expressways for example. For the most part the posted speed is 70 miles per hour on our expressways. It is 75 miles per hour north of Grand Rapids, but that is the exception to the rule.
However, 70 mph seems to be a joke to most drivers in Michigan. How often have you been driving at 75 mph or more and have drivers pass you as if you are driving at 30? Most of the time, right?
I guess we all feel that five over is okay, and the law won't care. Then, because everyone seems to be passing you, your speed creeps up and up to the assumed flow.
Did you know that 75mph in a 70 zone is illegal and can get you a ticket and maybe points? Yep!
Michigan Auto Law quotes the Michigan speed laws saying:
In Michigan, it is not legal to go 5 miles over the speed limit. A driver who violates the laws is responsible for a civil infraction and faces up to a $100 fine, points on his or her driver’s license, and up to $100 in court costs.
Ouch! Who doesn't drive at least five over?
And, just so you are aware, the faster you are going, the worse it gets!
Michigan Auto Law says the points a speeding driver may get on his or her driver’s license include:
More than 15 mph over the speed limit (as set by law or ordinance): Four (4) points )
More than 10 mph and up to 15 mph over the speed limit (as set by law or ordinance): Three (3) points
More than 5 mph and up to 10 mph over the speed limit (as set by law or ordinance): Two (2) points
More than 1 mph and up to 5 mph over the speed limit (as set by law or ordinance): One (1) point
That is crazy! One mph over the speed limit and I could get a ticket and a point? Bizarre!
