Possible Immigration Detention Center Coming to Ionia
If you thought immigration detention centers were only along American borders, think again because one could be coming to Ionia.
According to WOOD, with the rising numbers of immigrants being detained at America's borders, the numbers of detention centers is also on the rise and they are popping up all over the country.
A private company that operates detention centers in other parts of the country is looking at turning a closed Michigan Prison in Ionia into a federal immigration detention center.
The $35 million facility would be working with United States Customs Enforcement on adult immigrants who are detained but have not been charged with or convicted of criminal offenses.
The state of Michigan has not approved the sale of the correctional facility.
