It was 2023 when Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed the law making it illegal to use your cell phone while driving.

Hopefully all of us are aware of this and if using our phones it is hands free/speaker use only.

Most of us, however, don't fully understand the law. Don't use my phone while driving except in hands free mode I get. But did you know there is more to it. Michigan's cell phone law is now a "no touch" law. In other words, it is against the law to even touch your phone at all while driving.

I'm sure all of us, at some time, grabbed our phone while driving for whatever reason, and that is a big NO NO!

Specifically, the Michigan State Police say you cannot:

  • Make or answer a telephone or video call.
  • Send or read a text or email message.
  • Watch, record, or send a video.
  • Access, read, or post to social media.
  • Browse or use the Internet.
  • Enter information into GPS or a navigation system.

In other words, DO NOT TOUCH your phone or any other electronic device even if you are stopped at a red light!

As an example, let's say you have to use GPS navigation. Set it up before and put it in voice mode and get your Siri or Google voice direct you. No looking at a map! Personally, I like this better and I never have a problem.

This relative new law has saved many lives and injuries already. Steven Gursten of Michigan Auto Law.com says:

"Michigan’s law banning hand-held cell phone use while driving “prevented 2,485 crashes, 11 fatalities, 1,400 injuries and $98 million in economic damages across Michigan’s 8 million drivers."

More than 31 states have gotten on the "no touch" band wagon, MSN.com says. So, let's be smart and safe out there! Your family and friends depend on you!
