It was very sad news that I received this morning.  A dear friend and colleague had died, and I didn't want to miss this opportunity to pay tribute to a wonderful, caring and loving man who had made such a quite difference in our community.

Jack Hoppus, a pioneer radio announcer for WLAV and WMAX during the 1960s and 70s, died at his home this Monday, from complications from cancer.  Jack was 83.

Jack had enjoyed a long career in West Michigan radio including at WLAV-AM (1340) and WMAX-AM (1480) before he retired from radio in the late 70's.

Jack and I worked together around 1976 at WMAX.  He was always a ton of fun to work with, and a true professional.  Long before I moved to Grand Rapids, Jack was one of the area's first "rock-jocks" on WLAV-AM.  FM was hardly given a thought back then.  AM was the king!

Jack did a lot of work in advertising and voice-over work, too. His wonderful bass voice was featured for years on commercials for D&W and other local businesses.

Jazz was always a huge part of Jacks life.  He was on the board of the West Michigan Jazz Society, and he actually owned more that 3,000 records, LP's, of course!

Jack's home, on College Ave., SE, was the scene of many a party.  He was famous for throwing great parties.  They were always filled with music, with top, local musicians and singers, stopping by to jam.  It was always a night to remember.

Jack Hoppus was a true friend and shinning star in this community.  Although his star may be dimmed, we'll all have 'Jack' stories to fill decades.

We'll miss you Jack!
