Michigan State has been beleaguered by missteps and scandal the past few years. The latest of course was the firing of head football coach Mel Tucker amid a sexual harassment allegation.

Now Spartan fans are hoping the football ship will be righted with the hiring of a new head coach, Jonathan Smith, stealing him away from Oregon State.

Arguably the biggest scandal to beset the university was former Michigan State University sports doctor Larry Nassar.

Nassar was sentenced in 2018 to 40 to 175 years in prison after he admitted to molesting some of the nation's top gymnasts for years under the guise of medical treatment. He was accused of sexually assaulting hundreds of women and girls.

Now a new president takes the reins of Michigan State in hopes of righting the entire university ship.

The 57-year-old Guskiewicz, a neuroscientist, founded the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center and his work has influenced concussion guidelines in the NCAA and NFL.

Guskiewicz said:

“I am eagerly looking forward to working with all Spartans to build on this great university’s strong historical foundation. I intend to foster a culture of collaboration and, by working together, we can propel MSU to even greater eminence through its powerful commitment to student success, knowledge discovery and land-grant service.”

Dr. Guskiewicz's term and the hard work involved, begins on March 4, 2024.
