Summer break is fast approaching for our public schools. Kids and teachers alike are chomping at the bit to run free for the summer. They are already planning their vacations, summer projects and just stuff.

For example, Grand Rapids Public's last day in June 2, Grandville's is May 29, Wyoming schools is May 28, East Grand Rapids lets out on June 3, Forest Hills is finished on June 4, Kentwood on June 5, Holland on June 4, and it goes on.

However, what if you didn't know when school would wrap up for the school year? That is a big pain.

Schools in the Upper Peninsula are in a little pain.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Remember all of the snow they had in the Upper Peninsula this past winter. They had a record amount of snow forcing so many snow days that they almost lost count.

You have to make up those days if you are over your allotment and they went way over. Yikes!

Take Tahquamenon Area Schools for example. Their students may have to stay in school until June 17. Ouch!

They are hoping that the Michigan legislature will cut them some slack because this will be a big problem if they don't.

Here is some of what the school district wrote on their Facebook page:

"House Bill 5797 passed the House last week and now moves to the Senate for consideration. The Senate will need to pass House Bill 5797 this coming week. If the bill passes the Senate, TAS will only be required to make up five days instead of nine. In that case, we would continue with in-person instruction, and the last day of school would be Wednesday, June 11, with a half day for students.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE BILL DOES NOT PASS?
"If the Senate does not pass House Bill 5797 next week, we will move forward with Plan B and students would either remain in school until June 17, or the last in-person day would be June 4, with Chromebooks sent home and coursework provided through Google Classroom. For families without internet access, we will send home a Chromebook with the required materials downloaded for offline use."
Come on legislature, have a heart and help them out! The kids deserve a break!
