Warning! Is a Deadly Virus Spreading in Michigan?
It is a virus that kills nearly 100 percent of those infected. It is a very scary thing, and has now been detected in Michigan.
It is rabies, and seems to be spreading throughout the northeast United States. Just when you would think okay, we live in Michigan and we are fine, rabies cases have been detected around the state.
The good news is that so far no human cases are known. But that doesn't mean it can't happen.
Here in Michigan bats are the most common carriers and have been located in many counties including Ottawa county.
WZZM13.com reported that "according to the Ottawa County Department of Public Health (OCDPH), a bat recently sent to the state lab from Ottawa County has tested positive for rabies. Officials said that no humans have contracted rabies, and the deadly disease is preventable."

With bats more active this time of year, we all need to be aware and careful to never touch a bat if the occasion happens to occur.
Yes, it is "very rare for humans to die from rabies with fewer than 10 deaths reported in the United States each year," the CDC says.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT RABIES INFECTION
The CDC says:
- Making sure your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccines
- Keeping wildlife wild - stay away from wildlife for both human and animal safety
- Calling animal control to remove stray animals from your neighborhood
- Washing bites or scratches immediately with soap and water after possible rabies exposure
- Seeking medical care urgently if you may have been exposed to rabies
Let's be careful!
