On Sunday evening, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced new restrictions because of the surging COVID-19 cases across the state.  And Michigan wasn't alone in adding new restrictions with at least 7 other states implementing new or harsher restrictions over the weekend and many more announcing plans to do so this week.

Washington, Michigan, Utah, Ohio, New Mexico, Maryland, New York, and Oregon all announced new restrictions this weekend with New Mexico's being the most strict and Michigan's new restrictions falling somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of severity.  New Mexico is virtually in another lockdown with only essential businesses, health care facilities, and houses of warship remaining open.  New Mexico also issued a stay at home order.  New Mexico currently has the most restrictions of any state in the United States.

More and more states are jumping on board with new restrictions as COVID-19 cases eclipsed 11 million over the weekend.  Earlier today, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed an executive order to tighten coronavirus restrictions.  Even individual cities are beginning to draft their own restrictions when they feel like coronavirus cases are getting out of hand in the area.  The Mayor of Philadelphia announced new restrictions this morning due to increased cases in the city.

Like the other states and cities mentioned, Michigan's reopening is slowly rolling back and we shouldn't be surprised if the restrictions continue to become more strict as we get into the winter months.  The peak of the second wave of coronavirus infections isn't expected until late December or early January.
