It is called the Cyclospora Outbreak of 2026. We have heard about it but actually still don’t know that much about it. But, is it still a big problem that we need to worry about?

YES!

And, it is nothing to mess around with. It is still on going, has not lessened at all, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, (MDHHS) is still investigating because cases remain high.

MDHHS says that Michigan typically will see around 50 cases a year. But, this year, holy explosive diarrhea, as of July 16, 6,148 cases of Cyclospora, better known as cyclosporiasia, have been reported.

That is astounding, and we don’t seem any closer to determining the cause. Early investigation was pointing to lettuce or salad greens as a source. Then it moved to Taco Bell and the lettuce they were using. However, those early tests turned out to be a false positive, investigators say.

Investigators also said that yes, it probably was leafy greens, iceberg lettuce, that was causing the problem and quite possible it came from Taylor Farms, the produce giant.

This isn’t only localized to Michigan. It is spreading through multiple states.

WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO?

MDHHS says be extra careful. Wash all fresh produce thoroughly under running water, even if you plan to peel it. Avoid bagged lettuce and pre-mixed salad kits; opt for whole heads and discard outer leaves. Cook leafy greens when possible, especially raspberries, basil, and cilantro, and wash your hands frequently.

Let's hope we stay well.

Vegetables To Be Extra Cautious About Due To Latest Cyclospora Parasite Outbreak
