As the days get longer, more daylight, you might not have paid attention to the Sunrise and Sunset law for you vehicle.

You must have working headlights and taillights at all times!

The Michigan law states:

"State law requires ATVs operating between dusk and dawn to have functioning headlights and taillights. Operators must possess a valid driver’s license, and ATVs must be registered with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources."

It's not expensive to register because the State of Michigan only charges $26.25 for three years. The do say that local counties, such as Kent, Ottawa, Allegan, Barry, Muskegon, for example, may have additional requirements, so be sure to check them out.

And, seriously, it's a really good idea to keep the headlights and taillights on all the time.

WHAT ABOUT INSURANCE?

It is interesting that Michigan law doesn't say you have to have insurance, but it really is a no brainer to protect yourself and property to carry it.

WHAT IS THE PENALTY FOR HAVING NON-WORKING HEADLIGHTS AND TAILLIGHTS?

Legal Clarity.org says your vehicle could be impounded, or, you could be fined, depending on the county, between $50 to hundreds of dollars.
