Mice Are Our Pets of The Week On Wet Nose Wednesday

Brianna from the Humane Society of West Michigan was our guest today as we talked about our Pets of the week, Mice!
People often overlook our mice as pets, so these super sweet little guys have been waiting to find their families for nearly ONE WHOLE YEAR, can you believe it?! Mice have fairly short lifespans, so we're bound and determined to help these little ones find homes before their first birthday! Mice are very easy to care for pets, they don’t require much space in your home and have super fun personalities!

OODLES OF DOODLES

We are so glad we could help out with a recent large-scale rescue from a backyard Doodle breeder in Alabama. These poor parents were kept outdoors and never groomed, so Cathy Bissell and BISSELL Pet Foundation jumped in right away to help! They transferred all of the doodles up to Michigan with the help of staff from Harbor Humane, and local rescues go to work helping these dogs get the grooming and medical attention they needed and the love and care they deserve.

DOODLE PARENT NEGLECTED AND MISTREATED

The five doodles that were brought to us arrived in horrible care–matted, scared, and covered in their own feces and urine. We were able to get them groomed and into foster homes, and the relief evident on these dog's faces as we shaved away the heavy sheets of matted fur that had been pulling and tugging on their skin for who knows how long---definitely reminded us of why we do this work! We'd also like to give a HUGE thank you to Mya's Pet Salon for coming in super last minute to help us carefully groom these poor babies!

While the glow-ups of these 'after' photos make us so happy, the 'before' photos unfortunately reflect the fairly commonplace conditions of adult dogs used for breeding. Puppy mills and backyard breeders will breed 'purebred' puppies to sell for thousands of dollars online and in pet stores, while their parents suffer from neglect and lack of proper care.

If you're ever thinking about purchasing a dog or puppy from a breeder, ALWAYS do thorough research to make sure you're not supporting puppy mills like the ones these dogs came from.All of these dogs are now in foster homes where they're healing both physically and emotionally. HSWM offers a variety of Summer Camps for kids of all ages and interests, from My First Pet, which teaches kids about how to care for and interact kindly with their first pet, to ‘FUN’draising, which teaches campers how to fundraise for pets in need! Each camp includes games, crafts, animal time, and more! Your child will learn so much about animals and have a fun-filled experience that will be with them for a lifetime. FOWLING FOR FIDO

Our friends at the Fōwling Warehouse are hosting a Puppy Paw-ty this weekend, and you're invited!

Join HSWM at the Fowling Warehouse in Grand Rapids on Saturday, May 21st, from 10am to 12pm, to meet adoptable pups! In addition to playing host to our furry friends, Fowling Warehouse will also be collecting donations for the pets in our care, and anyone who gives ON-SITE donations will receive a free Unlimited Walk-In Open Play pass!

There will be a drop box upon entry for any of our much-needed items, such as canned dog food and canned kitten food. We'll see you there!
