Alert! Big Scams Lurking During Medicare Open Enrollment!
We are barely into Health Care Open Enrollment sign up period and bad guys, hackers, are at it again.
Every October Americans, seniors, sign up for Medicare during open enrollment. It began last Wednesday, October 15, and runs through December 7. Whether you are signing up for Medicare or simply reviewing your existing coverage and prescription plan, it is a good idea to asses the program.
Sadly, though, the bad guys, "scamers," are getting involved trying to get money or steal your personal information.
Stay alert!
It seem there are three things happening here according to a report on MSN.com.
#1, the report says, is the panic call.
"Victims receive a phone call from someone pretending to be a Medicare or government representative. The caller claims you must “verify” your Medicare number, Social Security number, or bank details immediately to avoid losing coverage or to receive a new Medicare card."
What should you do? "HANG UP because Medicare will never call you and ask for personal information."
#2, "Free Medical Equipment!
"In this scam, they promise “free” genetic testing kits, braces, or other medical supplies—but only if you provide your Medicare number. Once they have it, they bill Medicare for expensive or fake services and items you never receive."
Sound to good to be true? Of course it is. DO NOT RESPOND!
#3, High-Pressure Enrollment!
"Scammers take advantage of the confusion. They pose as “official” Medicare agents and push you to switch plans with promises of cash cards, free groceries, or “exclusive” coverage. They may misrepresent benefits or switch your plan without your full consent."
Too good to be true again? Yep! "Legitimate agents cannot offer cash or gifts to entice enrollment, nor can they cold-call you unless you’ve given permission."
