The 12th House, located on Jefferson Avenue, will remain open, according to a new update from owner Sarah Cash. The shop had previously been set to shutter on Dec. 23 after more than four years in business, with Cash citing economic pressures, declining foot traffic, and ongoing health challenges.

In a message shared with the community, Cash said weeks of reflection, along with new support, has led to a different decision:

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting, listening, and reevaluating what sustainability really looks like — for my health, for this space, and for the community that’s grown here. Because of that and with the help of this amazing community and a dear friend, we’ve made the decision not to close The 12th House at this time.

Instead of closing, The 12th House will enter what Cash describes as a “period of evolution.”

That means changes aimed at long-term sustainability, including reduced hours, clearer boundaries, shared use of the space, and new ways of gathering that don’t place the full burden of operations on one person.

“The heart of The 12th House remains the same — handmade art, community, care, and connection — but the structure around it is changing so it can continue in a healthier way,” Cash said.

The shop is known for its mix of handmade goods, local art, clothing, jewelry, crystals, incense, and spiritual services like tarot, astrology, and palm readings. Since opening, it has also served as a welcoming space for the LGBTQ+ community and allies in downtown Grand Rapids.

Cash acknowledged that the reversal may come as a surprise, especially after how openly she shared the emotional toll of a possible closure.

“Those feelings were real,” she wrote. “This decision comes from new information, new support, and a lot of careful thought.”

For now, Cash thanked the community for its patience, kindness, and continued support.
