Here Are The 10 Crazy and Funniest Michigan City Names
For sure, every state has cities with strange, funny, weird or unusual names.
How about Grand Rapids for example? We don't have any rapids. We have the wonderful Grand River, but the rapids went away a long time ago. (They may be on their way back.)
👇BELOW: TOP 10 MICHIGAN CITY NAMES YOU CAN'T PRONOUNCE!👇
However, Grand Rapids isn't a funny name. So I searched and have found several others that I'm sure we have all heard of, but when you think about it, are truly funny.
Here is a top 10 funny list of Michigan city names.
#10 White Pigeon - Corn is really big here. Who knew.
#9 Vulcan - No, Mr. Spock does not live there. Vulcan is in the UP right on the Wisconsin border.
#8 Dowagiac - If you grew up in a neighboring town you called this city "Dog Patch." Why?
#7 Colon - Come on, this is the Magic Capitol of the World, and home to the famed Abbott Magic store.
#6 Slapneck - I don't think anyone really knows why this UP little town is called Slapneck. An early orginal settler was John Slapnick and people think they just misspelled his name back then. Crazy.
#5 Podunk - This is a more common city name in Michigan than you think. There are actually three Podunks in the state, Barry County, Gladwin County and Presque Isle County.
#4 Jugville - Yes, there really is a Jugville in Newaygo, County. The Shack Bed & Breakfast is there, and that is about it.
#3 Bad Axe - It is in the thumb area of Michigan, and got its name, "Bad Axe" from a local Native American legend involving a broken axe, and the nearby Bad Axe River.
#2 Hell - This is actually not a city since it is an unincorporated community. It's northwest of Ann Arbor and developed around a sawmill, gristmill, distillery and tavern. I guess that speaks for itself.
And, LAST BUT NOT LEAST.....
#1 Climax - This village is right between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek with a population of about 700. According to Wikipedia, the story is "Climax got its name in 1834, when the family of Judge Caleb Eldred found a prairie after months of searching for good farmland. His son, Daniel B. Eldred, climbed a tree to look around and said, "This caps the climax of everything we saw." That seems a stretch but I'll go with it.
