Amazing! This Biscuit Mix Was Actually Invented in Michigan!
March is National Women's History Month, and I thought we should honor a Michigan woman who made life so much easier for all of us in the kitchen. However, you have probably have never heard of her.
But first a question. Are you a baker? I mean a home baker? Do you make pies, cakes, bread, biscuits?
I can assure you my wife, the lovely Susie is NOT!
I didn't say that, she did. Sort of like, I don't bake, I don't like to bake, and I won't bake. The end. Okay then.

At any rate, baking can be an art, and I honor all home cooks, women and men who bake.
However, it wasn't always that way. Before 1930 baking was a big chore, mixing this with that, measuring lots of ingredients, blending many things It was hard.
But, in 1930 a special baking mix was invented to become the first packaged biscuit mix available to the public. People loved it because all they had to do was add milk and have fresh baked biscuits in a jiffy.
And that was it, the very first packaged biscuit mix, JIFFY, was born.
HOW WAS JIFFY CREATED?
It was Mable White Holmes who created the fabulous JIFFY Mix.
According to a Jiffy Mix article, Mable's son brought home a friend to play. At lunch the playmate brought his own lunch because he wanted to eat the biscuits his father had made him. Mable said they were the saddest looking biscuits she had seen. She knew it was hard to make them, and thought she might be able to figure out how to make it easier.
It must have taken Mable quite some time to figure out the proper ingredients and measurements, but she finally came up with a mix that all you had to do was add milk and you had yummy biscuits.
Her husband was so impressed that they decided to develop the product, but it needed a name.
"When Mabel was young, the White family hired an accomplished chef, who's melt-in-your-mouth biscuits were nothing short of legendary. Mabel remembered her saying, "...tell your father his biscuits will be ready in a jiffy."
"What do you think about the name "JIFFY" Biscuit Mix?" Mabel asked.
And, the rest is history!
