The Hudsonville Chamber of Commerce has been looking at ways to give high school students hands-on learning opportunities.

So on May 23, Jenison and Hudsonville business owners will begin a program called "Engaging, Empowering, and Employing Students.”

This will be a joint effort of school officials, business representatives, and teachers from Jenison and Hudsonville who are hoping to increase the percentage of students who will complete at least an associate’s degree after high school.

From the press release:

“The goal of partnering with businesses is to give student’s hands on, real world experiences that help them to narrow down their career pathway prior to graduation,” said Sue Curro, the College Access Network Coordinator.  “We find that students with these types of experiences are more sure of what they want to do, or even what they don’t want to do, as they enter post secondary education options, which makes them more likely to succeed.”

The business community will have the opportunity to discuss potential partnerships with Nick Ceglarek, Superintendent of Hudsonville Public Schools, and Tom Tenbrink, Superintendent of Jenison Public Schools.  They will also hear from a panel of students, representatives from Royal Technologies, which piloted a hands-on learning experience with Hudsonville High School seniors, and Mayor Don VanDoesalaar.
