COVID-19 put the kibosh on the Kalamazoo Wings hockey season last year, but hockey is back and so are the fans.

While the Grand Rapids Griffins and Muskegon Lumberjacks had seasons with minimal fans last season, The Kalamazoo Wings elected to cancel their season due to COVID-19.

Well the K-Wings are back for their 47th season and will be opening the doors to Wings Stadium this Saturday, October 23, for the fans.

Athletes love to play the game, but there is something more electric when there are fans in the stands to support their team. That's why teams love home games.

According to FOX 17, Kalamazoo Wings forward Tanner Sorenson said, "bring some excitement and fun. Hopefully it's loud and fun. We want it to be fun here. If we win, it's fun, so hopefully we can do that for you guys."

So what does a hockey player do when they have the winter off? Sorenson said, "me personally, I didn't know what to do with my days especially once winter came. It's like wow, it was my first winter since I was three without hockey so just getting into new hobbies, new routine, new jobs."

This Saturday will be the K-Wings first season game when they host the Toledo Walleye. To make the home opener even more special, before the game will be the teams annual fan fest. That event kicks off at 4:30 p.m. with live music, food, drinks and plenty of activities to get the fans ready for the puck to drop at 7 p.m.

Those planning on attended the fan fest and game are encouraged to wear masks inside the arena but these are not mandatory.
