The weather has been so pleasant the last couple of days with clear skies and temps in the 70s.

That is changing this week, as we have a gradual warm up throughout the week. Temperatures will be near 90 by the end of the week and the first part of the weekend.

The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has put together this graphic to show the upward trend in the temperatures. Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year and even more heat-related illnesses. The National Weather Service has offered up a few tips on how to stay safe and cool during the warmer weather...

Another big concern is how hot it will be getting inside vehicles. Never leave children or pets in the car during warm weather. A reported 51 young children died in hot cars in 2019.

In just 80 degree weather, the temperature inside the car can reach 99 degrees in just 10 minutes. In 20 minutes the temperature can climb to 109 degrees. In a half an hour the temperature could be up to 123 degrees. And keep in mind, those figures are based on the outside temperature being just 80 degrees. You can only imagine how hot it would get with outside temperatures in the 90s!

They also remind us to keep our cars locked at all times so small children can’t hide in there while playing outside. They could accidentally get locked in a hot car.

The National Weather Service offers up other tips to stay safe during the heat on their website at www.weather.gov/safety/heat.
