The GVSU Lakers had a great season with a record of 12-1. The Lakers were 6-0 in their conference and 6-0 on the road. One win was in the playoffs where the Lakers beat Northwest Missouri State 13-8. The only loss for the season was the second playoff game that was against Ferris State losing 24-21. All in all a great season for the team and the coaches.

The Lakers were thrown a curveball on January 15 when head coach Matt Mitchell announced he would be leaving GVSU after 12 seasons. Mitchell had a record of 117-31 and led the Lakers to NCAA Division II semifinal appearances in 2014 and 2015. Mitchell took a job coaching outside linebackers and special teams on new Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell's staff.

The Grand Valley State University athletic department didn't have to look very far in finding a new head coach. GVSU promoted Scott Wooster from the team's offensive line/tight end coach and run game coordinator to head coach. Wooster has been with the Lakers for three seasons.

According to WOOD, Wooster is the 8th head coach in the history of the Laker football program.
