John Keating, long-time Detroit sportscaster for PASS and Fox Sports of Detroit Tiger baseball and Detroit Red Wing hockey, has decided to hang up his cleats/skates, so to speak, and call it a day after 45 exciting years in this crazy business.

You would have to have been listening to the radio and watching TV in late 70s and early 80s to remember that Steve Knight was a popular sportscaster here.

Who is Steve Knight? John Keating, of course.

Keating, born in Madison Heights, Michigan, was attending Grand Valley State University. While a student he got a job at the student run radio station WSRX. He worked hard and eventually became station manager. That got him an offer from WZZR, WZZM TV13's radio station, and off he went.

The problem was WZZR already had someone named "John" on the air so, as show biz goes, he had to change his name. No, not Cary Grant, that was already taken. They picked Steve Knight! Cool, huh!

By the way, WZZR later became WLHT which is a fixture of our, Townsquare Media, stations.

After a 12-year stint in Denver radio, (including the launch of the Colorado Rockies and the Colorado Avalanche’s inaugural season in 1995-96 and first Stanley Cup in 1996),  Keating, he could use his real name now, got back to his home town, Detroit.

He has been a fixture of Detroit sports broadcasting ever since working into pregame and postgame shows for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, and even doing color commentating for Tiger radio for a bit.

John Keating you are a class act and we will miss your integrity and professionalism!
