Five Mile road and Plainfield is not the place you want to be right now. There is a big gas leak and everyone is urged to stay away!

Fox 17 is reporting the Kent County Sheriff's office is reporting the roads affected are:

  • Plainfield Avenue between Coit Avenue and Jupiter Avenue
  • 5 Mile Road between Plainfield Avenue and East Beltline Avenue

Businesses in the area have been evacuated as well.

WOOD TV8 reported that around 8:20 this morning a gas main ruptured under a service the Plainfield Township Fire Department said. It looks as if contractors were working in the area when they hit the line.

TV8 reported the Plainfield branch of the Kent District Library along businesses within one half mile of the leak had to be evacuated due to extreme caution.

Northview High School and North Oakview Elementary are under a shelter in place order until further notice.

TV8 said Kent County Emergency Management sent out texts to all individuals and businesses in the area that they need to evacuate.

Luckily, no injuries have been reported thus far, and DTE arrived to handle the situation.

So far, the blocked off area is according to TV8 is:

Plainfield Avenue is closed from Jupiter Avenue to Coit Avenue, and 5 Mile Road was closed from Northville Drive to Plainfield Avenue. Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area.

Gas leaks are nothing to mess around with, especially when it seems to be as major as this one is. Use extreme caution and stay away from the area until the all clear is given!
