Not only was Saturday, Cinco de Mayo, it was the “Empty The Shelters” free adoption event that’s sponsored by Bissell Pet Foundation and there was plenty of wagging tails

This year’s event was also the first "Empty The Shelters" event that happened outside of the mitten state.  In all, 112 shelters from 13 states participated in Saturday’s event and as a fellow pet lover, the numbers are great to see.

Over 750 dogs, 650 cats and 26 other types of pets were adopted Saturday, and the Bissell Pet Foundation mentioned in their press release, that not all the shelters had reported their numbers as of Saturday night, so the number would go up, but over 1,400 pets were placed in forever homes. This also opens up room for more pets to be placed in shelters and put up for adoption, which means even more lives saved.

Cathy Bissell, the founder of the Bissell Pet Foundation said in the press release,

“We are absolutely overjoyed knowing that thousands of pets will sleep peacefully in loving homes for the very first time tonight.”

If you didn’t participate in this year's "Empty The Shelter" day, don’t worry, there are always more dogs and cats that would be ever so grateful for you taking them home, check out the West Michigan Humane Society’s page. (*there is an adoption fee.)

“Adopting truly changes your life,” continued Bissell. “There are wonderful cats and dogs of every type in our nation’s shelters just waiting to be loved. We hope the attention from this event will help even more pets find homes!”
