It looks like two donut businesses will be closing in the area, but a new one will be opening.

It was announced the other day that the Donut Conspiracy was closing its locations in Grandville and Cascade due to "financial issues surrounding the coronavirus pandemic."

That was the bad news. The good news...there will be a new donut shop opening up in Comstock Park!

The Grand Rapids Business Journal is reporting that a franchisee for the Dunkin' national coffee and doughnut chain purchased the former Checkers location on Alpine Avenue in Comstock Park. There are plans to open a store on that site.

The report says the current structure, which started out as a Hot 'N Now restaurant decades ago, will be demolished, and a Dunkin' location with a drive thru will be built in early 2021. Currently, according to the Dunkin' app, there is only one location in the state of Michigan, and that is in Traverse City. (I tried to access their website to find Michigan locations but their website was having issues.)

The new store will be Dunkin’s first in the Grand Rapids area since it rebranded and dropped the word “Donuts” from its name. The brand announced that it would officially be known simply as Dunkin' in September 2018.

Dunkin Donuts was founded in 1950 by Bill Rosenberg of Quincy, Massachusetts. Today Dunkin' has more than 8,500 restaurants in 41 states across the U.S. and more than 3,200 international restaurants across 36 countries. The chain was acquired by Baskin-Robbins' holding company Allied Domecq in 1990. Dunkin' is one of the largest coffee shop and donut shop chains in the world.

I loved the commercial they ran in 1984. Do you remember "Time to make the donuts..."?

The new Dunkin location will be at 4201 Alpine Ave., NW in Comstock Park...
