This was a murder case that had gone cold. Leads and information had dried up and any hope of finding the murder suspect had dimmed. What was happening?

NBC News reported this story of authorities finally finding their man after 30 years.

It goes back to 1993. A story of 23-year-old Rodney Barger. He was a rocker in Detroit who was called the “wild-man vocalist” of a popular Motown-area punk rock band called “Cold as Life." He called himself “Rawn Beauty.”

On a day in 1993 Rodney was coldly murdered in his bed, shot in the head, while he slept.

Richard Werstine, his roommate at the time, was arrested for the killing and lodged in jail. "But Werstine, who was out on bail, failed to appear for trial in June 1994 and a warrant was issued for his arrest, police said."

And that is when he became a ghost to the police. He eluded everyone for those 30 years.

👇BELOW: CHECK OUT OTHER MICHIGAN'S COLD CASES!👇

The strange thing was that he wasn't a stranger to other police departments. Over the course of those 30 years he was arrested several times, using different names each time, and even shot once in a police confrontation in Flagstaff, Arizona.

But, it was the 90s and there wasn't much of an internet, and fingerprint databases weren’t shared as they are now. So, he stayed on the lam.

Then by 2022, things had progressed remarkably. Fingerprints, DNA and more were now being shared, and the U.S. Marshals and the Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team task force actually picked up Werstine's trail finding him in Panama City, Panama. Together with Panamanian authorities they swooped in and got their man.

Werstine is now 56, back in jail where he belongs and awaiting trial.

Good work law enforcement!

Michigan's Cold Case Deck of Cards: Dealing Unsolved Crimes

Crime Stoppers of Flint and Genesee County has put Michigan's cold cases on a deck of playing cards and distributed them in jails and prisons across the state, as well as into communities. The hope is that these long unsolved cases will find answers. This series will reveal one or two cards a week until the entire deck is available.
