Warning Grand Rapids! Now Costco Smoked Salmon Could Kill You!
If you remember last October, we wrote about a Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon recall. The concern was it was possibly contaminated with listeria and that is a really bad thing for humans.
Costco acted fast and immediately pulled all of the salmon, which had been manufactured by Brooklyn bases Acme Smoked fish Corp and sold at Costco between October 9 and 13.

Case closed, right?
Wrong!
The FDA just updated their recall to the highest level of risk, a Class 1, according to Southern Living.com
The FDA defines a Class 1 recall as, “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
That, my friends is very scary!
Now, you would think that because it was back in October, and Costco took fast action to pull the product that there is no reason to worry. That is not exactly correct.
The FDA, along with Costco, is worried that customers may have bought this popular product back in October and tossed it in the freezer, not being aware of the recall. So they are re-issuing the recall/warning, and asking all Costco shoppers to do a freezer check. If you possibly do have a package don't take a chance. THROW IT OUT!
IS LISTERIA REALLY THAT BAD?
Are you kidding? It sure is. The Southern Living article says, Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems can occur.
Here is what you should look for in your freezer: Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon with lot number 8512801270 and a best by date of 11/13/2024.
Stay safe!
