Does This Building Look Familiar? It’s a Grand Rapids Icon Today!
This is the Shipman Coal Company here in Grand Rapids on the corner of Plainfield and Leonard on the west side. It was built in 1924 and was the yard office of the coal company. It was closed in 1946 as Shipman moved elsewhere, and shortly after was turned into what is today an iconic Grand Rapids restaurant.
It is now the family owned Choo Choo Grill and has been for the past 77-years! Truly amazing and one of the best little spots in Grand Rapids.
Whether breakfast or lunch, the Choo Choo serves it up. They're open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday thru Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday.
What a place and what great food. I always know I have to get there early to get a seat for lunch, and whether it's one of the few booth or a seat at the grill the atmosphere is a main part of the charm.
As I said, WHAT FOOD! I've never had breakfast there because I'm always working, but one of their classic burgers is a must. Yes, they have other sandwiches, but I'm telling you, get a burger. They cook it right in front of you and it's one of the best you'll find in Grand Rapids.
The Olive Burger is to die for, as well as the Depot Burger, the Cheddar Bacon Melt or they'll just make it they way you want.
The meatloaf sandwich is fantastic, Tuna Melt, Fishwich & Cheese, and others.
And don't forget something yummy to drink like a Root Beer Float, Malts, do I hear Chocolate Peanut Butter Malt, and more.
If you haven't been to the Choo Choo don't pass it up. Your Grand Rapids life won't be complete until you've eaten there.
