It's the boating season, and here in Michigan we're all excited to finally be able to get out on the water and have fun.

However, all boaters need to do it safely. Many states are changing their boating laws. In Minnesota for example, according to sister station KROC, beginning July 1st all boaters, adults and young people must have a valid watercraft operator's permit to legally drive a boat.

But what about Michigan. Do we all have to have an operator's permit or license?

Actually, no, you do not have to have a license to operate a boat in the State of Michigan.

But there is a caveat. All boaters born after June 30, 1996, must have a boating safety certificate.

The boating safety certificate, according to the Michigan DNR, can be earned by completing the traditional classroom, online or interactive course.

There are other state regulations that all boaters must abide by, so here is a quick review.

  • Those born on or after July 1, 1996 must have a boating safety certificate to operate a motorboat with a motor (or motors) greater than 6 hp
  • Children younger than 12 years old:
