The Grand Rapids Ballet's new version of The Nutcracker made it's public debut at DeVos Performance Hall on Friday night.

After 30 years of success, the version of "The Nutcracker" that many in West Michigan have grown up on is gone. A message in the program at the show from Grand Rapids Ballet's artistic director, Patricia Barker, explains why:

The desire to embark on a new production of The Nutcracker started the first day I walked through the doors of Grand Rapids Ballet. At the first meeting, the staff explained that GRB's beloved production of The Nutcracker was over 30 years old, with crumbling sets, missing props, and no knowledge of who the original choreographer might be."

The decision to update The Nutcracker was made, but with so much established tradition, how would fans react?

Apparently, pretty well.

The excitement for Grand Rapids Ballet's new production of "The Nutcracker" is obvious. You could feel it in the lobby. You could hear it when the lights went down and genuine shrieks of excitement came up from the crowd.

The big sets, the bright colors, and music the from the Grand Rapids Symphony set the stage. Then, the Grand Rapids Ballet dancers bring you in.

If you are used to the older version, expect changes.

Remember the huge Mother Ginger costume from past performances? It's gone.

The growing Christmas tree from past years? The effect is now aided by video projection. Video projection is used a few times throughout the performance.

There are changes, but some highlights will be just as you remember. The Russian dancers were always a favorite in the past, they still are. The audience was ready for them and the welcomed them and their music with rhythmic applause almost immediately.

The Arabian dance was another highlight. There is no doubt it caught the attention of the crowd. You could have heard a pin drop in DeVos Performance Hall during the performance.

Of course, Clara, the Nutcracker Prince and the Sugar Plum Fairy all still play major roles, but you'll notice some changes from the past version.

Which are the biggest highlights of the show?

Ask my 8-year-old daughter. She's the expert. A few of her favorite parts:

  • I like when the nutcracker comes to life! It is cool!
  • I like when the fairies come out and I really like how they look! It's pretty!
  • I like the way the shirts and dresses are colorful and the styles of the dresses and set!

The show started about 10 minutes late. The total time was about 2 hours, including a 20-minute intermission.

Grand Rapids Ballet took on a big project and a lot of pressure when they decided to create a new version of The Nutcracker. Judging by the excitement before and the cheers at the end, fans approve.

The new version of "The Nutcracker" should be set to entertain both long-time and new fans for years to come.
