To check out a hotspot, you do have to be 18 and a GRPL library card holder. Not a member? You can sign up here.

You'll be able to check out one hotspot at a time, which can connect up to 15 devices to the Internet. The rental period for hotspots is 21 days, which you can renew if there are no holds on it.

Here is additional info from GRPL on the the new hotspot program:

  • Hotspots can be picked up and returned to the Customer Service Desk/Walk-Up Window at any Grand Rapids Public Library location.
  • When picking up a hotspot, you must be 18 or older, have a valid GRPL library card, and show a current photo ID with proof of address. You will need to sign a waiver the first time you check out a hotspot.
  • Hotspots will be deactivated 72 hours after the due date.
  • You will be held responsible for the full replacement cost of the hotspot ($95.00) if it is not returned within 30 days of the due date .
  • Simple instructions are included with each hotspot.

They also suggest you watch the above video tutorial. You'll find hotspot instructions and troubleshooting tips here.

The Hotspot Lending Program has been funded in part by a grant from the Wege Foundation through the Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation.

You can currently check out all materials from GRPL using their To Go program. They've announced that GRPL will soon be entering Phase III of their reopening plan: February 24 GRPL buildings will reopen with limited service including:

- Library account assistance
- Public computers and WiFi
- Reference questions
- Holds pickup
- Free printing, copying, and faxing
