What do you do when you see a red light or stop sign in an intersection? Stop? Slow down but drive through it? Stop and then go if no one is coming?

There is only one correct answer here!

STOP, of course, and do not GO until the light turns green. If it's a stop sign, stop and wait for your turn if other cars are there.

But, that doesn't seem to be the case many times around Grand Rapids and Michigan. People seem to be oblivious to red lights/stop sighs, and blast right through. I would say that Michigan drivers are our biggest road danger!

This was a conversation on Reddit.com/Grand Rapids. Many people were weighing in with comments such as:

"Cops don't care about traffic violations."

"People are in rush/ distracted/ so I make it a point to look around before going. I saved myself a few times from that."

"This morning at 7 am I got honked at for not going thru a red light."

"I don't know what it is about GR, but the drivers here are some of the worst I've ever encountered. The only place with worse drivers is Florida."

Is this an epidemic of dangerous red light/stop sign running? I'm not sure, but the law can be tough on a driver caught running a red light or stop sign.

Driving Laws.org has published the 'rules of the road' for Red Lights and Stop Signs.

If you get caught running a stop sign or red light in Michigan, you'll typically be looking at a fine and points on your driving record.

Stop sign and red light violations are civil infractions in Michigan. Generally, convicted motorists are looking at a fine of up to $100. However, court costs can increase the amount the driver has to actually pay.

A stop sign or red light conviction will also add two demerit points to a motorist's driving record. Accumulating too many points can lead to license suspension. However, eligible motorists can avoid the points by completing a 'basic driver improvement course.'

Slow down, guys. Let's keep all of us safe, please!
