On December 15, volunteers gathered to honor and remember veterans in Grand Rapids.

Over 100 wreaths were laid on the graves of veterans in Grand Rapids.

The wreath laying is part of a national movement called Wreaths Across America.

This is Grand Rapids' seventh year participating in the project which has grown each year.  A total of 126 wreaths were laid this year.

WZZM has details about plans for the future and comments from participants:

"It's a very humbling experience and it's a sense of real honor to be able to be a part of an international event that honors, remembers and teaches," says Maj. Keith Sikkema.

"It's very important for us to honor our military and show our respect for the people who protect our freedom," adds Sarah Nielsen, who brought her husband and three children along to lay wreaths.

The Civil Air Patrol would like to someday cover every veteran grave with a wreath.
